Kaunis loppukesän viikko. Lämpötila 10 - 20 astetta. Mainio sää toteuttaa minulle mieluisaa harrastusta, umpimetsässä vaeltelua. Tällä siihen onkin parhaat mahdolliset olosuhteet. Vieressä on Pallas-Yllästunturin kansallispuisto, jonka tämä osa on perustettu jo 30-luvulla. Hyvällä syyllä voi olettaa, ettei se ole koskaan kirvestä nähnyt.

Ei muuta kuin evästä reppuun ja metsään. Maasto on ikivanhaa ja monipuolista taigan luontoa. Päivän aikana voi täällä hyvin kävellä jylhillä mäntykankailla, tunturipaljakalla, umpiryteikköisillä puron varsilla tai upottavilla soilla. Ei tällaista metsää ole jäljellä kuin kansallispuistoissa. Onneksi edes vielä siellä sitä on kaiken kansan ja tulevien sukupolvien ihmeteltäväksi. Oikea metsä on vahva kokemus. Ken peikkoihin uskoo, näistä metsistä niitä löytyy! Kulkiessa tulee vähän Jukolan Laurin olo kun häntä toukolalaiset luonnehtivat poikaseksi, joka metsäs häärii ja katseleepi puita väärii.

Yksin metsässä saa olla. Turisteja näkee kyllä poluilla jonkin verran, mutta umpimetsään harva viitsii, jaksaa tai uskaltaa. Toisaalta sen ymmärtää. Nykyihmiselle ei kartan ja kompassin käyttö kuulu ehkä perustaitoihin. Ja vaihtelevassa sekä osin vaikeakulkuisessakin maastossa tulee taatusti hiki.

Tänä vuonna täällä on hillittömästi mustikoita. Ne ovat pulleita ja komeita. Keräsin niitä suuren kopallisen kotiin vietäväksi. Puheet marjasadon heikkoudesta ovat kyllä kovasti liioiteltuja. Ovat tainneet markkinamiehet sen medialle syöttää hintojen nousun toivossa ja hyvin tuntuvat onnistuneen. Viisi kiloa mustikoita 50 eur Hakaniemen torilla!

Sunnuntaina osuin sääksen pesälle. Se on melkoinen risukasa tukevan hongan latvassa. Sääksi on komea lintu, siipiväli puolitoista metriä. Harvoin sitä pääsee näin läheltä näkemään.

Metsässä on myös paljon tilhiä, järripeippoja, sinirintoja sekä tietysti lapintiaisia, korppeja ja kuukkeleita. Myös tämän viikon luontoääni pajulintu visertelee kaikkialla. Uskomatonta, että tuollainen alle 10 gramman painoin siivekäs muuttaa keskiseen Afrikkaan asti ja selviää mm. yli Saharan. Ja sitten taas sieltä takaisin. Väittävät niitä löytyvän keväällä Suomesta 10 miljoonaa yksilöä ja kesässä määrä kuulemma kolminkertaistuu!

Beautiful summer week. The temperature was between10 and 20 degrees. It was excellent weather to fulfil the hobby I like, wandering in solid forest. For this there are indeed the best possible conditions. Alongside is Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park and this part has been established already in the 30th. With good reason can be assumed, it has never seen the axe.

So nothing else as sandwiches to rucksack and into the forest. The terrain is ancient and diverse Taiga nature. In one day you can here walk in old pine forest, in bare mountain, on dense stream sides or on sinking marshes. Such a forest there are still only in the national parks. Fortunately even yet there for surprising all the folks and the coming generations. Real forest is a very strong experience. Who believes to trolls in these forests those can be found!

Alone in the forest can be wandered. The few tourists use the paths, but to solid forest few come. On the other hand it's to understand. To the today's folk the use of the map and compass does not belong to the basic skills. And in the changeable and partly also in rough terrain you get assuredly sweating.

This year here are a lot of bilberries. They are big and meaty. I collected those a lot to be taken home. The speeches from the weakness of the berry crop are of course much exaggerated. Perhaps marketing men have fed it to media in the hope of the increase of price and very well they have succeeded. Five kilos blueberries cost 50 euros on the market in Helsinki!

On Sunday I found a nest of osprey. It is a considerable pile of brushwood on the top of pine. The osprey is handsome bird, wingspan one and a half metre. Seldom it can be seen so close.

In the forest there are also much waxwing, brambling, blue slopes and of course Lapland tit, ravens and Siberian jays. Also willow warbler chirps all over. Unbelievable that this kind of bird weight under 10 grams migrates to the central Africa and succeeds e.g. over Sahara. And then from there again back here again. It's told there are in Finland in springtime again 10 million individuals and in the summer amount is said to be tripled!
