25. - 31.4. 2010 HANKIKELIT POHJOISESSA

Huhtikuun viimeiselläkin viikolla on täällä vielä mainiot olosuhteet hiihtämiseen. Yöllä oli kunnolla pakkasta ja päivät vaihtelevia mutta enimmäkseen oli puolipilvistä. Latujakin huolletaan edelleen. Lumi on kyllä niin kovaa ja karkeaa, että perinteisen hiihtämiseen tarvitaan liisteriä. Luisteluhiihtoon keli olisi ollut ihanteellinen, mutta en tullut niitä suksia mukaan ottaneeksi.

Itävaltalainen naapurini Herwig luonnehti hiihtokeliä yksinkertaisesti: "super, super, super". Siinä oli tekijämiehen arvio. Ikää Herwigillä on lähelle kahdeksaakymmentä, mutta päivälenkit ovat edelleen 30 - 40 km! Minua kyllä jo puolet lyhemmätkin matkat väsyttävät vietävästi. Herwig vietti vaimonsa Gertruden kanssa tänä vuonna koko talven täällä joulukuun puolivälistä lähtien.

Hankikeli on nyt parhaimmillaan. Tein metsäsuksilla pitkän lenkin ja hanki kantoi täydellisesti. Parilla sauvan työnnöllä sukset liukuivat monta metriä. Pienessäkin mäessä vauhti kiihtyy kovaksi ja 2,40 pitkillä suksilla jarruttaminen on vaikeaa. Varovainen sai olla, ettei puihin törmännyt. Lumisella jängällä liikkuessa saa olla tarkkana kulkusuunnan kanssa. Suunta pitää ottaa kompassilla ja karttaa pitää seurata. Muuten eksyy satavarmasti. Niin samannäköisiä metsät ja suot ovat lumikelillä. GPS olisi paikallaan, mutta sellaista vekotinta en ole vielä hankkinut.

Lintuja ei metsässä näkynyt eikä juuri kuulunutkaan. Mitä nyt muutama tiainen. Järripeippokaan ei ole vielä saapunut. Eikä edes telkät. Varmaan sulaa vettä on vielä niin vähän. Kutunivalla asusti yksi ainut joutsenpariskunta. Olivat niin ohikulkijoihin tottuneita, että päästivät ihan lähietäisyydelle kuvaamaan. Aamusella kävin tähyilemässä kanalintuja mutta vain yhden ainokaisen ukkometson näin. Mihin ovat pyyt ja riekot kadonneet? Kotimatkan varrella sentään kurkia ja kuoveja näkyi paljon.

25. - 31.April 2010 HARD SNOW WEATHERS IN NORTH

There are still excellent conditions for the skiing even on the last week in April. The weather was varying from deep frost at night to well but mostly half sunny days. Also the tracks are further serviced. Snow is however so hard and coarse that a strong paste is needed for traditional skiing. To the skating skiing the weather would have been ideal but I did not come taken along those skis.

My Austrian neighbour Herwig characterised the skiing conditions simply: "super super super." In it there was the factor man's estimate. Herwig has an age near eighty but the day ski trips are still 30 - 40 km! Yes, even already half shorter trips tire me so much. Herwig spend here with his wife Gertrude this year for the whole winter since the middle of December.

The hard snow weather is now at best. I made a long skiing trip in the forest with my forest skis and the snow carried perfectly. With a couple of pushes the skis slid many metres. In small hills the speed accelerates hard and with 2,40 long skis the slowing down is difficult. It was allowed to be careful that it did not crash into the trees. When moving in a snowy few forest, mainly on swamp landscapes it must be exact with the direction of movement. The direction must be taken with a compass and the map must be followed. Otherwise one goes surely astray. The forests and swamps are so similar on the snow weather. GPS would be in place but I have not acquired such a gadget yet.

The birds neither were seen in the forest nor really belonged at all. What now a few titmice. The brambling has not arrived yet either. And, at least goldeneyes. Surely there is still so little unfrozen water. In Kutuniva lived only a single swan couple. The ones which had got used to the passers-by let to come quite to the near. Early in the morning I went to watch fowls but saw only one lonely old man capercailzie. Where have the hazelhens and willow grouses disappeared? Along the homeward journey cranes and a lot of curlews were however seen yet.
