9.10 - 14.10. 2010 Ensilumen viikko

Jo tuloyönä satoi ensilumen. Tuli kotona alle pannuille talvirenkaille heti käyttöä. Alkuviikon tuuli pohjoisesta ja se teki nollan tienoilla olevasta säästä kolean kylmän. Ihan kunnon talvivaatteissa sai liikkua. Sitten tuuli tyyntyi ja kun aurinkokokin tuli esiin, oli oikein mukava retkeilysää. Tällaisena päivänä satuin kiipeämään Pallakselle Montellin majan kohdalta.

Kaikkien sesonkien ulkopuolisuudesta huolimatta kohtasin tunturissa muitakin kulkijoita. Montellin autiotuvalla piti lepopäivää nuori neito koiransa kanssa. Oli tullut edellisenä päivänä Pallakselta. Sieltä oli tulossa myös kolmen päiväretkeläisen ryhmä, jotka kertoivat nähneensä runsaasti kiirunoita ja pulmusia. Olin kateellinen. Kun laskeudun alas tunturista, puuskutti vastaani kolmen ikäluokkaani kuuluvan rouvan ryhmä. Kaikilla isot ja painavat rinkat selässä. Tunturin kutsu on vaan niin vastustamaton.

Järvillä oli lintuja yllättävän paljon. Isokoskelot liikkuvat suurina parvina ja kalastelevat. Seurasin havaintoja Tiirasta ja laitoin sinne omanikin (www.tiira.fi). Joku oli nähnyt Jerisjärvellä jopa kahden tuhannen koskelon parven. Näin itsekin yhden noin kahden sadan linnun parven Utkujärvellä. Kutunivalla katselin melkein vierestä, kun joukko koskeloita kalasti ihan rannan tuntumassa. Isoja ahvenia ne nielivät pureskelematta. Kätevästi vain kala oikein päin suuhun ja lurps! Sinne katosi. Auto on mainio piilokoju. Jos pysyy vain sisällä, niin linnut eivät useinkaan pelkää lainkaan.

Myös joutsenia on useilla järvillä 10-30 yksilön katraina. Aikuiset antavat jälkipolven kerätä voimia muuttomatkalle. Joutsenia näkyy varmaan jäiden tuloon asti mutta se ei taida kaukana olla.

Sinisorsia oli Muonion järvellä iso joukko. Ehdotin paikalliselle juttuseuralle lintutornissa, että ehkä joku ruokkii niitä ja linnut viihtyvät siksi. Hän piti ajatusta Muoniossa absurdina. Täällä kun sorsat on kuulemma tapana ampua ja pistää pataan!

28th - 14th October 2010, First Snow Week

Already at the first night it fall snow. The winter tires I changed at home got usage. Beginning of the week the wind was from the north and temperature was around zero. So it was pretty cold. Decent winter clothes were useful. Then the wind died down and when the sun came up, it was very nice hiking weather. On a day like I happened to climb to Pallas fjeld.

Although the season was off I met on the mountains other travellers. In Montell cabin there had a rest day a young lady with her dog. Then I met three other hikers, who reported seeing a lot of rock ptarmigans and snow buntings. I was jealous. When I descend down from the mountain I met upcoming three my age lady's group. All had big and heavy backpacks on. Fell invitation is just so irresistible.

On the lakes there were a surprising amount of birds. Mergansers were moving in large flocks and were fishing. Someone had seen in Jerisjärvi up to two thousand merganser's flock. I myself saw one of about two hundred birds flock in Utkujärvi. At Kutunivalla I watched to a group of mergansers fishing. Big perch were swallowed without chewing. They located just the fish upright in the mouth and lurps! There it disappeared. The car is a great hide. If you remain just inside, so the birds are often not afraid at all.

Also there were a number of swans on the lakes in groups of 10-30 birds. Adults give descendants to gather the forces of migration journey. Swans are here probably until the ice entry but it does not seem to be far away.

On the lake of Muonionjoki was big crowd of mallards. I proposed another local birdwatcher in the tower, that maybe someone feeds them. He liked the idea in Muonio totally absurd. Here the ducks are used to shoot and put to the pot!
