22. - 27.10. 2011 - SUMUINEN VIIKKO

Vielä näin lokakuun lopussakin oli maa lähes lumeton. Vain tuntureilla oli hiukkasen lumihärmää. Lämpötila vaihteli nollan molemmin puolin. Ilmeisesti tällainen säätila tuottaa sumuja, sillä niitä kesti melkein koko viikon. Oli välissä kuitenkin jokunen selkeämpikin jakso. Jopa aurinko paistoi välillä ja se lämmitti kummasti näinkin myöhään syksyllä.

Kun yöt olivat pakkasella, lisääntyi jääriite järvellä päivittäin. Parilla järvellä näin joutsenia sinnittelemässä avopaikoissa. Keräävät viimeiseen asti poikasille kokoa ja voimaa muuttomatkaa varten. Myös koskeloita ja haapanoita näkyi pieninä parvina.

Selkeänä päivänä kiipesin Pallakselle Vatikurua pitkin ja kohtasin kurun päässä kaksi nuorta kiirunaa. Matkan varrella jaloissa pyöri tämän tästä sopuleita. Niitä on tunturissa todella paljon. Ovat vikkeliä otuksia, jotka vilahtavat ihmisen havaittuaan hetkessä lähimpään koloon. Niitä on hankala valokuvata.

Kiirunan kaltaisen linnun näin myös iltamyöhällä tien laidassa nokkimassa kiven siruja. En osannut oikein päättää, oliko se riekko vai kiiruna? Päätin pitää sitä riekkona ja korkealla tunturissa kohtaamiani lintuja kiirunoina. Voin kyllä erehtyäkin.

Pallaksen juurella on lyhyt pätkä liikuntavammaisille valmistettua polkua. Sen varrelle on pystytetty kymmenkunta luonnollista kokoa olevaa oravapatsasta. Polun pätkää kutsutaan juhlallisesti Orava-avenueksi. Oravat esittävät seitsemää maailman uskontoa. Se on aika epätodellinen taidekokoelma. Uskonnolliset oravat ja peräti "avenue" tunturissa! Siinä on kaikki niin pähkähullua, ettei patsaista voi olla pitämättä.

22. - 27.October 2011 - FOGGY WEEK

Ground was still snowless this late in October. There was only on the fjelds some thin snowcover. The temperature varied on both sides of zero. Obviously this kind of a weather produces fogs because they lasted the almost whole week. However, there were even a few clearer periods. Even the sun was shining few times and it was still warming also this late in the fall.

When a frost had the nights, ice crust increased at the lakes every day. At a couple of lakes I saw swans struggling in the open places. They collect the size and the power to the young for the migration trip. Also mergansers and European wigeons were seen as small swarms.

During a clear day I climbed to Pallas along Vatikuru and met two young rock ptarmigans at the end. Along the trip lemmings were turning constantly in feet. There are really many them in the fjeld. Quick creatures will flashing after having perceived the human being to the nearest hole in a moment. It is difficult to photograph them.

Other evening I met of the bird like a rock ptarmigan to peck the chips of the stone in the edge of the road. I did not know right if this was a willow grouse or rock ptarmigan? I decided to consider it as a willow grouse and as rock ptarmigans those birds I met other day in the high fjeld. I can indeed make a mistake, of course.

On the root of the Pallas there is short piece of a path that has been made to the physically disabled. There are set up about ten natural sizes squirrel statues along the path. The short piece of the path is solemnly called Squirrel -avenue. The statues present the seven religions of the world. It is a quite unreal art collection. Religious squirrels and even "avenue" in fjeld! In it there is so much madness that it cannot be liked from the statues one all.
